Bonnie: Cost of a Baby

My husband was in a California union for almost 6 years and he had a great medical plan.  After we got married, I joined the employer-sponsored group plan and had a $20 copay each time we went to Kaiser.  It was awesome!  Or so we thought…

About a year before our son was born, Nathan was laid off from the union and then decided to go back to school.  He had a reserve saved up for medical in case of these times. (So many people have been out of work, it’s crazy.)  The reserve lasted until May 1st, 2010.  I was pregnant and our son was due September 2nd, 2010.    We will just go on COBRA, right?  I mean, how expensive could it be?

Now, my dad Steve Brauer owns Brauer Insurance Services.  We’re located in San Jose, California and we do individual and group plans.  He’s been doing this for almost ten years now.  He told us we’d be shocked when we saw the TRUE price of our insurance and WE WERE!

$1200/mo. for a healthy 24 and 30 year-old.  What?  $1,200 a month?  No, no, no.  That was the price for the family of 8, right?!  Wrong.  That was our premium because of the employee-sponsored health plan through the union.  It was all great to go to the doctor for $20 until we saw the TRUE price of our medical premiums.

Needless to say, we opted out of COBRA and moved to my company’s plan through Brauer Insurance Services.  I’m glad that my dad knows about insurance.  It really helped me when I thought we were going to have to pay this rent-sized premium every month.
